The transcendentalism movement took place during the early 1800's when America was developing its own writing style.

An earlier transcendentalist scandal surrounded the publication ofAmos Bronson Alcott's Conversations with Children Upon theGospels (1836). Alcott (1799–1888) was a self-taughteducator from Connecticut who established a series of schools thataimed to “draw out” the intuitive knowledge ofchildren. He found anticipations of his views about a priori knowledgein the writings of Plato and Kant, and support in Coleridge's Aidsto Reflection for the idea that idealism and materiality could bereconciled. Alcott replaced the hard benches of the common schoolswith more comfortable furniture that he built himself, and left acentral space in his classrooms for dancing. The Conversationswith Children Upon the Gospels, based on a school Alcott (and hisassistant Elizabeth Peabody) ran in Boston, argued that evidence forthe truth of Christianity could be found in the unimpeded flow ofchildren's thought. What people particularly noticed about Alcott'sbook, however, were its frank discussions of conception, circumcision,and childbirth. Rather than gaining support for his school, thepublication of the book caused many parents to withdraw their childrenfrom it, and the school—like many of Alcott's projects,failed.
