A fascinating exploration by Patrick Deese of the essence behind the debate. The question of Deckard's humanity versus the Replicant's humanity is one of what "humanity" itself is and what it even means to "improve" on it.

One replicant is so real that human memories are implanted intoher mind and false photographs of her childhood are given to her. Thetest used by Deckard to determine the identify of a replicant isbased on the lack of emotions such as empathy and compassion on thepart of the replicant. Yet once again it is the replicant, Roy, thatteaches empathy to Deckard when he saves and spares Deckard's lifeand says moments before his own death, "Quite an experience to livein fear isn't it. That is what it is to be a slave." The replicantswere slaves to their own identities and to the fear of what it meantto exist as a replicant (i.e. Knowledge of 4 year life span.)Ironically, the film plays with the identity of the Bladerunner asbeing a replicant himself. This connection is made when Deckard has adream of a Unicorn in an Eden-like forest, then, at the end of thefilm, Gaff leaves behind a paper puppet of the unicorn; this may showthat Gaff knows about Deckard's identity of being a replicant andthus knows his implanted memories of the unicorn. Deckard realizeswhat it is to be a slave to his unconscious programming; to have allhis memories implanted at the mercy of Tyrell corporation; know thathe is programmed to die; that he is the machine-- the monster. Thismay be questioning the future ability of programming one's geneticcode by DNA engineering as in the film . The finalirony of Deckard's realization of his identity as a replicant at theend is that he can now empathize with the replicants--the one thingreplicants are not supposed to be able to do. In fact, many of theother replicants show the ability to show empathy suggesting thehumanness in the machine.
