Antony and Cleopatra Essays | GradeSaver

Since Velleius' history occupies an entire section of Lactor, again, you need not include the Lactor reference, and since this is Velleius' only extant work, you need not include the title of it since it is commonly understood to mean his Historia Romana.

[GradeSaver, Antony and Cleopatra, Analysis, Act v, scene ii] Works cited:Book.

Social dynamics between men and women were further influenced by Cleopatra. Her hold on Antony's heartstrings led to the disarray of his ability to uphold the position of husband and his affections for his wives suffered. Both Fulvia and Octavia fulfilled the role of stereotypical renaissance wives, who wait patiently for their husbands return. Antony spent most of his time in Alexandria with Cleopatra, so each wife was left alone and uncared for. His first wife Fulvia dies and Antony believes it is because he spent too much time away. Cleopatra's sexual control over Antony conflicts with what is considered the unimportant role of women during the time. Enobarbus supports the lesser role of a female by adding that there is no reason to be sad at his wife's death because there are more women to be found. Caesar notices Antony's desertion and complains that his sister Octavia is not getting the attention she deserves, that as "the wife of Antony [she] should have an army for an usher and the neighs of horse [should] tell of her approach" (Bevington 776). Social appearances were especially apparent during the time period considering the wife of a soldier would have been placed at a higher social level than wives belonging to commoners.

Critical Essays on Antony and Cleopatra, William …

These conflicting views are instrumental in the way that Cleopatra and Antony act.

It is, no doubt, in the third and fourth acts, very defective in construction. Even on the Elizabethan stage, where scene followed scene without a pause, this must have been felt; and in our theaters it would be felt much more. There, in fact, these two and forty scenes could not possibly be acted as they stand. But defective construction would not distress the bulk of an audience, if the matter presented were that of Hamlet or Othello, of Lear or Macbeth. The matter, then, must lack something which is present in those tragedies; and it is mainly owing to this difference in substance that Antony and Cleopatra has never attained their popularity either on the stage or off it.

The contrast between the greatness of Antony and the unworthiness of his love is shortly stressed again: Antony is 'The triple pillar of the world transform'd/ Into a strumpet's fool'. This passion is shown as unworthy, and we see that it is dangerous since it causes Antony to make serious strategic mistakes and lose a decisive battle against Caesar. It also makes him neglect his new wife Octavia, which breaks the brief reconciliation between the two rivals. A solution to the problem might be for Antony to give up Cleopatra, but to do so is not in his power and would not make him happy: 'I'th'East my pleasure lies' (Act II, scene III) he says soon after his wedding with Octavia. The love between Antony and Cleopatra is tragic because there is no way it could make them happy.

If the conflict in Antony himself cannot be resolved, the political conflict cannot but have a bloody end. Antony, Caesar and Pompey are in a struggle for power and the party organised by Pompey to seal reconciliation does not fool the spectator. After Pompey's death, the struggle between Caesar and Mark Antony is inevitable. Two men of such outstanding capacity and ambition cannot be satisfied with a half of the world each. Caesar sums up the situation after Antony's death:

William Shakespeare wrote Antony and Cleopatra around 1606, during the reign of King James ².

Antony and Cleopatra is a tragedy by William Shakespeare

In Macbeth, Shakespeare establishes fate as a motif as Macbeth constantly seeks to know his fate, and uses it to help establish his purpose that humans have the free will to choose their actions, unlike Macbeth had.

Antony and Cleopatra Critical Evaluation - Essay - …

As Oedipus, who commits the most terrible crimes (killing his father, marrying his mother) without knowing it, and all typical tragic heroes, Antony is guilty, but not responsible.

Antony and Cleopatra also seem to have to submit to a force than makes Caesar inevitably triumphant. Here again, it is more about a psychological determinism than about the traditional will of gods. Early in Act II, the winner of the struggle for Roman power is foretold, since we hear the Soothsayer predicting to Antony that he has no chance to win against Caesar:
