She demonstrates throughout the essay how we may apply this sort of thought to avoid ethnocentric patterns of thought when we concern ourselves with aesthetics, language, and even every day interactions....

An Essay on the New Aesthetic | WIRED
Though these objections turned out to be only the beginning of thedebate between Dickie and Beardsley on the nature of aestheticexperience (See Beardsley 1969, Dickie 1974, Beardsley 1982, and Dickie1987; see also Iseminger 2003 for a helpful overview of theBeardsley-Dickie debate), they nevertheless went a long way towardshaping that debate, which taken as whole might be seen as the workingout of an answer to the question “What can a theory of aestheticexperience be that takes seriously the distinction between theexperience of features and the features of experience?” Theanswer turned out to be an externalist theory of the sort thatBeardsley advances in the 1982 essay “The Aesthetic Point ofView” and that many others have advanced since: a theoryaccording to which an aesthetic experience just is an experience havingaesthetic content, i.e., an experience of an object as having theaesthetic features that it has.
In this essay, I shall argue that it is not possible for there to be an objective standard of taste that can be defined through a set of binding aesthetic principles that can be used to judge value of artistic works.

The notion of the aesthetic attitude has been attacked from allcorners and has very few remaining sympathizers. George Dickie iswidely regarded as having delivered the decisive blow in his essay“The Myth of the Aesthetic Attitude” (Dickie 1964) byarguing that all purported examples of interested or distancedattention are really just examples of inattention. So consider the caseof the spectator at a performance of Othello who becomesincreasingly suspicious of his own wife as the action proceeds, or the caseof the impresario who sits gauging the size of the audience, or thecase of the father who sits taking pride in his daughter’sperformance, or the case of the moralist who sits gauging the moraleffects the play is apt to produce in its audience. These and all suchcases will be regarded by the attitude theorist as cases of interestedor distanced attention to the performance, when they are actuallynothing but cases of inattention to the performance: the jealoushusband is attending to his wife, the impresario to the till, thefather to his daughter, the moralist to the effects of the play. But ifnone of them is attending to the performance, then none of them isattending to it disinterestedly or with distance (Dickie 1964,57–59).
The book contains a selection of essays on aesthetics, some of which have been revised or added to. A number of the essays are aimed at the abstract heart of aesthetics, attempting to solve a cluster of the most important issues in aesthetics which are not specific to particular art forms. These include the nature and proper scope of the aesthetic, the intersubjective validity of aesthetic judgements, the correct understanding of aesthetic judgements expressed through metaphors, aesthetic realism versus anti-realism, the character of aesthetic pleasure and aesthetic value, the aim of art, and the artistic expression of emotion. Others are focussed on central issues in the aesthetics of particular art forms: two engage with the most fundamental issue in the aesthetics of music, the question of the correct conception of the phenomenology of the experience of listening to music with understanding; and two consider the nature of pictorial representation, one examining the well-known views of Ernst Gombich, Richard Wollheim, and Kendall Walton, the other articulating an alternative conception of seeing a picture as a depiction of a certain state of affairs. The final essay in the book is a comprehensive reconstruction and critical examination of Wittgenstein's aesthetics, both early and late.
